The Department makes the scientific expertise and professional competencies of its researchers available to public and private organisations through consultancy, training and research services. These include, among others, drinking water analysis, environmental plastic monitoring, and environmental, toxicological and microbiological analyses for hospitals and private companies.
The Microbiological and Chemical Water Analysis Laboratory (AMCA) carries out research activities and third-party testing and consulting services.
The main areas of interest include groundwater protection, water quality monitoring and environmental protection.
The Microbiological and Particulate Contamination Monitoring Laboratory and the Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics Laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Orazio Romeo, provide specialised services and consultancy to companies and public and private organisations, supporting research activities, quality control and advanced microbiological, genomic and bioinformatics analyses.
Since 2018, third-party activities have mainly focused on monitoring microbiological and particulate contamination in high infection-risk hospital environments (including operating theatres, intensive care units, transplant centres and assisted reproduction and compounding units) in two major hospitals in the region: Papardo Hospital in Messina and the Metropolitan Hospital of Reggio Calabria. The laboratories also carry out bioinformatics and genetics analyses commissioned by private stakeholders, including life science and diagnostics companies, legal firms and public healthcare institutions, supporting the assessment of horizontal transmission of microbial genotypes in hospital wards and contributing to the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

The Pharmacology and Toxicology Laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Domenico Trombetta, is authorised by the Italian Ministry of Health (Decree PMC No. 47/2022) to perform quality control of medical-surgical devices. This allows the laboratory to carry out quality and safety analyses on products such as disinfectants, insecticides and repellents, supporting companies and institutions in bringing products to market in compliance with current regulations.
Alongside these activities, the laboratory has developed, for over fifteen years, a consolidated research line dedicated to natural products and phytocomplexes, with particular focus on nutraceutical and phytotherapeutic formulations, investigating their properties and mechanisms of action.
The laboratory is available for scientific collaborations and third-party activities with companies and public and private institutions interested in product development, characterisation and evaluation in a qualified academic environment with multidisciplinary expertise.
